We Champion Abilities and Enrich Lives!

A heartfelt thank you goes out to The Women’s Giving Circle of Harford County for their generous donation to our program! The Harford Center was awarded a $5,000 grant to create and stock a Women’s Pantry. In the coming months, we will be creating a space for personal care items, clothing and “go-bags” for the women we serve to maintain independence and dignity while in the community. We are so grateful to The Women’s Giving Circle of Harford County for their generosity and commitment to serving the women and children of our communities.

A Message from the CEO

It is with mixed emotions that I announce the official closing of The Harford Center’s Highland site.  Originally opened in partnership with the County to serve participants in northern Harford County, Highland led us into the development of our vocational program.  The Harford Center did not have a history of supporting people to find jobs, do volunteer work, and explore job development.  This program had to be developed from the ground up!  This required a shift in thinking and adaptation from staff, participants, and families.  Change is always tough, but through hard work and commitment to the people we support, the Highland Center was born!  We would like to extend our appreciation to our Director of Employment Services, Kelly Warnagiris for her innovation and leadership in transforming our culture into one that supports active decision-makers, wage earners, and contributing members of our community!

How did we get to the point where we needed to close this location?  Over time, it was realized that this location was more of a philosophy than a space.  This philosophy needed to be expanded to all the people we support.  Every participant needs to feel like an active contributor to this community and their lives.  A merge of locations seemed like the next best step.  Like all change, this closure has had its challenges.  We have a vision and a purpose to Champion Abilities and Enrich Lives!  Merging sites will move us in this direction.  For some, the closure of this space brings sadness at the loss of memories, a core group of peers, and a shared purpose.  We invite all staff to embrace this new chapter as part of our shared purpose. While we recognize this loss, we also recognize the opportunity to grow together by building new relationships, learning from one another, and strengthening the services we provide.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to the staff who helped make this move happen. Highland will not be forgotten; its pioneering spirit will lead us on our next adventure.

Staff Spotlight

Joe has been with The Harford Center for 6 months as a Direct Support Professional, and in that short time has made a significant impact on the people he supports and his peers.  He is always willing to step in and help when needed.  After the loss of a team member who supported one of our volunteer roles of once-monthly food deliveries, Joe stepped in to ensure the work continued.  Though he was not familiar with the routes, Joe took on the challenge and ensured that the deliveries were made.  Joe’s willingness to grow and be a team player at the height of our need ensured a seamless transition for the people we support.  We are proud of Joe’s growth since he came to The Harford Center and can’t wait to see what else is in store for him!

Meet Apollo

At the Harford Center, we strive to build consistent, trusting relationships with the people we support. For Apollo, his connection with a staff member has made all the difference to his enjoyment of his services. Apollo has been attending The Harford Center for many years and recently his staff noticed a change in his desire to go out with his peers. His team was concerned about what had changed. When a long-time staff member returned from leave, Apollo began to regain his desire to go out and explore. The relationships our staff build with the people we support make a lasting impact!
