The Harford Center’s community is a powerful force. On July 13th, a group of mighty volunteers, staff, and participants rolled up their sleeves and worked together to transform The Harford Center. Over the course of a day, five volunteers, 15 staff, and 2 participants overhauled our Havre de Grace location. We were overdue for a spring cleaning and purge of old, tired items. Through the hard work of our Board volunteers and Harford Mutual’s volunteers, 50 brand new chairs were assembled for the Center. At the same time, staff and more volunteers were sorting, trashing, and cleaning top to bottom. We filled 2 dumpsters and four trucks of items that needed to go. Sometimes, it is hard to let go of items, but it can also be rejuvenating! The Harford Center was truly rejuvenated.
This special day was but one example of what a group of determined, caring, and hardworking people can do when they work together on a common goal. The Harford Center has been so blessed by its partnerships, volunteers, and staff. It is through these relationships that we have built the Harford Center community. If you are looking to make a difference, we always welcome and celebrate our volunteers. A group of caring people can move mountains; in our case, we moved piles and piles and reorganized and transformed our community!

Thank you so much to volunteers Jessica Smith and Meredith Johnson from Harford Mutual! Jessica and Meredith put in a ton of work to help us assemble our new furniture. We were very grateful to have them here; Harford Mutual has done so much to support The Harford Center over the years! It was also wonderful to talk to Meredith. In 1961, her great-grandparents started The Harford Center in their living room to address a need in the community. It looks like giving runs in the family!

Pottery Barn has launched a new line of accessible furniture that is functional and stylish. Some of the pieces are rather pricey, but this is a definite win for the disability community. Check out the whole line here.
For many who live on Social Security, this year’s 5.9% cost of living adjustment has not been enough. With inflation hovering around 8-9%, the “raise” has felt like a pay cut. The Senior Citizens League has good news: they estimate that next year’s cost of living adjustment will be 10.5%. If so, that will be the largest increase in Social Security payments since 1981.
Representatives from The American Medical Association and American Dental Association pledged to expand disability training for students during a recent American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry’s One Voice Conference in Florida. Many people with disabilities struggle to find quality health care from professionals who truly understand their needs, so this is a big win.
